I was at CVS this evening and the name of the CVS version of the Olay lotion is called Perfecting Cream.
Have a great weekend everyone!

Dry Shampoo - Is It Really Worth All The Hype?
Not to get overly political, but if there is one thing I get really irritated with these days, it is marketing campaigns. The media is so pervasive, it is as if everything popular starts with a campaign that we can't escape. This wouldn't be so awful if we could trust every company to be responsible, but we certainly just cannot. So, what happens? Instead we have to do all of this back research or try a million things before we find out what new products are actually worth it.
I find this to be the case with the crazy dry shampoo campaign. I'm not even sure where it started, but I can't stop hearing about it everywhere. It is as if companies made a problem and then created a solution to make more money. If my hair is oily, well, I should wash it, right? Sure, I may have washed it yesterday, but if I worked out today or was sitting in 90 degree weather, maybe a shower wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Well, not anymore. With the constant reminder that washing your hair everyday is bad, we are hearing about dry shampoo all of the time. Considering my face is more on the oily side, my scalp also tends to get this way. So, I decided to try out some of these dry shampoos to see what would happen. I tried two separate brands in very different price groups. For one brand, I even tried to separate application processes. This is what I found.
First off, dry shampoo is only really good when your hair isn't already oily. If you are already seeing strands sticking together and your hair looks dirty, dry shampoo will do nothing. It isn't magic. However, if you do find that your hair is probably going to look oily later that day, it might be a good solution. One of my cousins actually tried it to combat what happens to her when she works in a hot kitchen as a pastry chef. She has very long hair and it takes quite a bit of time to style. Her feeling was that it wasn't for her. She felt that after being in that kitchen all day smelling like food, the dry shampoo didn't make her feel fresh, so she didn't feel presentable. I tend to agree with her even though my hair is far shorter. Of the products I used, here is what I have to say about them.
1. Oscar Blandi Non-Spray Dry Shampoo - $19.00 at Ulta
When I first started hearing about all of the hype around dry shampoo I went on a search for some. I visited my salon earlier that week and found that with my new haircut the crown of my head was getting oily after only one night. I figured it was from having to touch it so much to style, but I wasn't pleased with constantly having to wash and style every day. I didn't find any dry shampoo products at Ulta at the time, so I bought this one. First off, I hated, hated, hated the application method. It is a small bottle with a small tip. In order to put the dry shampoo in your hair, you literally have to tip this thing over like baby powder and try to get it as close to your scalp as possible without spilling half of it all over the place. To make matters worse, I didn't feel like it did anything at all. I was just left with a powdery shoulder and oily hair. My advice is avoid this one, it isn't anything great even though it is by Oscar Blandi. Oh, and just take one look at the price and the picture of the bottle below. Really? 19 dollars for that? Not a good look.
2. Oscar Blandi Spray Dry Shampoo - $23.00 at Ulta
This experience was even funnier than the first. While I can say I wasn't left with a powdery shoulder, the bottle is such a liar. This is supposed to be volumizing dry shampoo. Nope, it wasn't at all. Instead, the difference was that it came out of an aerosol can and just made my hair knotty and hard to manage. It did take up some oil, but only close to my scalp. Any hair that was already oily just stayed that way and the product disintegrated within an hour or two. I went to work the morning I used this stuff and by lunch time I was trying to figure out if I could wash my hair in their sink without looking like a nutcase. My hair was so short back then I couldn't put it up and I ended up visiting Walgreens on my lunch to buy a headband to try to hide how awful it was. I used it a second day over a weekend and this was even worse. It says it is invisible, but it wasn't. It kind of gave my hair a greyish look. It was just a bad experience for a super expensive price. My vote on this one, another no go!
3. Salon Grafix Dry Shampoo - $5.99 at Walgreens
Although my blog is devoted to getting the best for less, there are some things I don't skimp on. I think you may have been able to see that by earlier blogs about my favorite make-up choices (Too Faced, Smashbox, etc.). I tend to spend more on make-up or skin care products if I believe that drugstore options are less effective. I think as women we deserve to pamper ourselves even if it means an occasional splurge. I mention this because I don't want anyone to think I was slamming Oscar Blandi just because the products are more money. However, honestly, the Salon Grafix formula is much better than Oscar Blandi. As I have mentioned before, I am not sold on trying one product one time. I like to experiment with additional products, especially when magazines or other experts support items. So, after hearing about the Treseme version of dry shampoo, I went to my favorite drugstore, (say it with me) Walgreens, to find it. They didn't have it yet, but I did find this Salon Grafix version. I have to say, I still don't think it is worth the hype, but this product is more effective. In fact, I actually used it today and don't feel very gross at all. It doesn't leave a white residue and it doesn't really last 12 hours, but it will get you through a day of work at least.
Overall, my thoughts are this. If you have thicker hair that is hard to manage, but gets oily, dry shampoo is probably best for you. I don't think people with baby fine hair will do well with this type of product no matter which brand you choose. However, I don't want to dissuade anyone who wants to try it from doing it. I only reviewed two brands, there are a bunch of others who make dry shampoos and may do it better. So, if you know someone who recommended a brand, go for it. In fact, share it with the group. I would like to know so I don't have to walk away from my trial and error with these products with a bad taste in my mouth. Still, if you are going to try it, choose a moderately priced brand first. Don't waste your money like I did spending $23.00 dollars on something you cannot return and find no joy in. If you have already done so, well, don't use it as a dry shampoo, but if you are trying to tease your hair for an updo or want a more structured look, you can use it on clean hair to add some manageability.

Olay - Drugstore Miracle
Even as young as most of us are, keeping our skin healthy is truly one of the most important parts of keeping a positive self image. The only problem is that most of us know this and still don't do what is necessary to ensure it doesn't happen to us. For instance, most women don't start inviting wrinkle creams and eye creams into their regimens until their 30s. This is an issue because damage to your skin started when you were just a little girl running around at camp. One person I do know who has always taken care of their skin is my mother. She has been wearing creams and moisturizers since her teenager years and any creases she has are negligible compared other women her age. This was also something she taught my sister and I years ago. So, today I wanted to talk about a line of drugstore products I think are great.
My mother used to be a big Mary Kay fan. She would have the parties and buy all of the products. My sister and I loved this, but it all kind of fizzled out when her Mary Kay lady retired or moved away (I forget which). So, within the past couple of years she started using Olay products. They are a bit pricier than I would like to spend on any product, but as far as I can tell they are extremely effective. Plus, the best part is that CVS makes a line that are very similar and some of their products are just as great. I can't really get into too many specifics about what products work best or why. I am not an esthetician or dermatologist and it would be horrendous for me to lie about being an expert. So, I will just share the one product I love. However, I encourage you to look at the most current issue of InStyle as they had a great article on what products to introduce into your skin care regiment at different decades of your life.
First thing I would say is stick with the regenerist line. This seems to be the higher line part of the Olay brand that boasts some good stuff.
The second thing is that if you are out of ideas for what skin cream to buy next, purchase the Olay Regenerist Deep Hydration Regenerating Cream. I absolutely love it, love it, love it. It is thick and the texture does not feel oily. It is very hydrating on your skin and I feel like it really made my skin look nice. I bought it a couple of times, but happened to be in a CVS looking for it when I found their version. I wish I could tell you the real name, but I can't. Unfortunately I went back to the Olay product and don't have an old bottle lying around. However, it is the same packaging in shape, color, and dispenser. If you have a CVS nearby I encourage you to look into it. It isn't as effective as the Olay brand, but it is darn close for a little cheaper.
I should be at my mom's this weekend and I will rummage through her cabinet so I can share the rest of the products. So, more info to come! In the meantime, here is what the Olay product looks like that I am suggesting.

Fun Wedge Finds for Under $50
As I have mentioned many times over, I have a sick obsession with shoes. However, what I have not expressed is that it is actually deeper than that. Of all of the shoes I am most obsessed over, it has to be wedges. Not only do I love the way they look, but I also love that they are far easier to walk in than most heals. So, today I decided I would introduce you to 10 of my favorite wedge finds.
1. Blowfish Wedge - $47.99 at Amazon
I'll admit, these wedges are a bit odd. However, aren't most of the shoes Blowfish make unique? I would say so. What I like about these shoes is that they are so unique. They seem to have a tighter fit to the ankle, so dresses or skinny capri pants would look best. Plus, I think the price is fairly reasonable. I tend to spend less on my goofy shoes, but I think for the quality of shoes Blowfish makes, it is a worthy investment.
2. Michael Antonio Penny Loafer Wedge - $44.00 at Zappos
To start, my philosophy on wedges is the higher the better. I love wearing high wedges. I do not think my physical therapist would agree; however. Yes, I spent a month or so undergoing back treatments for wearing all of those stilletos a couple of years ago. I can say that wedges are safer, but also be careful that you can drive in them. You may want to opt for some driving shoes once they get to this height.
In any case, I have been eying these shoes for a while now. I love that they are suede and ultra tall. I also kind of like that penny loafer look. I think this would be super cute for work with a nice tighter fitting skirt and a cute button down under a black tank sweater. Or, you could wear them under a longer pair of jeans. It will elongate your legs making them thinner looking and the toe of these shoes would be super cute under a boot cut leg.
3. Camilla Lace-up Wedges - $29.40 at Urban Original
So you knew I couldn't get through a shoe list without posting some shoe choices from Urban Original. I should really look into running their social media. I digress, I love these lace up wedges because they can be cute with a little skirt or a pair of jeans. They are simple, suede, and just tall enough to give you an extra inch or so of height. I think they are a great basic addition to your shoe collection for a great price.
4. Bumper Zena Sparkly Wedge - $26.50 at Urban Original
Of course a second Urban Original choice. I know these are going to appear even crazier than the Blowfish shoes, but I love these wedges. The best part is that the black sparkles are already out there, but they also make a gold, silver, and multi-color option. I personally love the purplish multi-color choice. They remind me of Jeffrey Campbell's shoes of which makes them even more attractive to me. I think they would be really fun for going to the club or spicing up a simple outfit. They would be cute with a simple, yet trendy dress choice or even jeans or skinnys. I love them, do you?
5. Michael Antonio Ankle Strap Wedge - $58.25 at Amazon
These are totally a cheat, I'll admit it. They are obviously over $50, but I couldn't resist. Of all of the shoes I have had on my wishlist, it has been these. Since I celebrated my graduation from Graduate School by purchasing a pair of Jeffrey Campbell wedges, I did not buy these Michael Antonio's; however, I seriously think about them whenever looking for good stuff to post. In fact, I was watching Pretty Little Liars the other day and noticed that Hanna was wearing a pair of similar shoes in red. It reminded me of these and I had to do a wedge blog post as a result. They are super high and the ankle strap is just an awesome touch. If you recall the striped dress top I chose from Lily Boutique yesterday, this pair of shoes would look super cute in an outfit together. My recommendation is absolutely give them a chance, you will not regret it.
6. Bumper Sandal Wedge - $25.08 at Make Me Chic
I'm not really sure where to start with this pair of sandals. They are certainly different, sporting a rounded heal and thick straps. However, I couldn't turn away when searching for great shoes to post. I guess I should share a little secret about my style choices. When I used to shop at Old Navy all of the time, one of the ways I would pick out which shirt choice to buy would be by choosing the one no one else would purchase. I kind of like the challenge of choosing the ugly cute option so that I can make it look cute with whatever I am wearing. It makes my style unique and shows me I can make something out of nothing special. I believe these shoes may fall into that category since I couldn't think of too much to say. I think that the play on geometric shapes would look good with stripes or an angled cut shirt. I would probably find some flowy asymmetrical shirt to wear over a pair of skinny capris to make these look really cool. They are almost a contemporary look. I think they will turn heads for sure. Plus, at $25.08 per pair, I'm not sure there is much to complain about if you do like them. If you find you dislike them, you can go back to my archive where I made my old Steve Madden shoes into a Jeffrey Campbell knock off and make your own new pair.
7. Miz Mooz Brown Sandal Wedges - $49.99 at Piperlime
There are two things I like best about this choice. First, I like how the pattern of the cork changes in the back of the heal. It is kind of a neat detail that really makes this pair of shoes stand out. The second detail I like is the ankle band. I really like the look of ankle strap shoes. It seems to thin out your ankles and make your legs look leaner. They are super chunky, so dress choices may be difficult; however, I think they would be cute with shorts, capris and obviously jeans.
8. Asos Wedge Gym Shoe - $31.03 at Asos
This pair of shoes is super crazy. When I looked at them all I could think is that whoever buys them must have a specific outfit in mind. They are absolutely your pair of Reebok's with a contemporary twist. I think what made me really attracted to them was the material and the color. It's a nude suede shoe with a thick sole to add some height. I think these are certainly a challenge to dress up properly, but they will be a good topic of conversation. I am thinking dark jeans and a super cute shirt; however, nothing too fancy. Maybe you have or can find a shirt that mimics a sportier look. They would be really cute to wear to a basketball game.
9. Miss Me Black Wedge - $29.99 at Piperlime
This pair of shoes is actually a Rachel Zoe choice on the website. I wasn't particularly impressed by that, but some people may be. Still, I really like these and I am never a huge fan of that thin strap that goes over the toes. I find it almost uncomfortable looking, but I don't get the impression that it will be true with this pair of shoes. Miss Me is a cute and affordable brand and the fabric at the top of the shoe is really fun. These are definitely a pair of shoes you can wear under long pants, but I don't see why you would want to unless you wear them everyday because you love them so much. They are definitely shoes that you want to stand out when wearing an outfit.
1. Blowfish Wedge - $47.99 at Amazon
I'll admit, these wedges are a bit odd. However, aren't most of the shoes Blowfish make unique? I would say so. What I like about these shoes is that they are so unique. Burt's Bees - Is It The Bee's Knees?
Oh, Burt's Bees, where can I start with you? Most people are familiar with Burt's Bees up to this point. They were once somewhat exclusive, selling at a few stores like Whole Foods and other organic retailers. However, now they are growing. You can find their products at the grocery store, drugstore, maybe even places like Target. They boast earth-friendly natural products and that is great, but my issue is whether I can say wholeheartedly that they are just as good as my non-natural and earth-friendly products. I don't want to sound insensitive to the state of our earth, it is important to me. Still...perhaps if Burt's Bees isn't any good, I can find another brand better for cheaper (Burt's Bees products generally range from $6-$10).
I have had a couple of different Burt's Bees products over the past couple of years. I am going to provide my opinions on four or five of their products.
1. Acne Solutions Spot Treatment
I actually really like this spot treatment a lot. It has a rather astringent scent. I felt it smelled a bit like ginger, but when you read the bottle it seems it can only be willow bark. Either way, it kind of gave me the impression that it might work well. My guess was true also. I felt it was a reasonable item for reducing those awful outbreaks that occur every now and again. I wouldn't say it was a miracle worker in that within hours a blemish was gone, but I would say that by the next day it drastically reduced redness and size.
2. Acne Solutions Blemish Stick
The blemish stick was also a good choice in my opinion. I personally think their spot treatment and blemish stick are the same product, but what I liked more about the blemish stick is that it has a smaller top and I believe it is a roller ball application. Now, don't hold me to that, I may be thinking of another product, but either way, it is just as effective as the spot treatment.
3. Pore-Refining Mask with French Green Clay
I actually don't know if they make this product anymore to be completely honest. I didn't see it on their website today, but that doesn't mean stores aren't still carrying it. Either way, I wouldn't recommend it anyway. It isn't a bad product, it just isn't a very clean or effective one. Basically they give you a tub of green powder. Your job is to mix it with water forming the clay and apply it to your skin using a tiny spatula. I found this product to be messy and pretty useless. I would strongly recommend the Freeman Peel-Off mask I mentioned in my facial cleanser blog as opposed to this product. I felt that when I used the Freeman mask I could see my skin looking more radiant immediately.
4. Naturally Nourishing Milk & Honey Body Lotion
This is another product I would avoid unless you like watery lotion. It smells divine, but I prefer creamier lotions. I didn't feel it was very effective and it is very wet on your skin. It might be nice for cooling off a sunburn skin because it has milk in it. It may act as a natural neutralizing agent, but for moisturizing your skin, there are better products. I tend to prefer the creams from Bath and Body Works and the prices are very comparable.
5. Super Shiny Grapefruit & Sugar Beet Shampoo and Conditioner
It sounds awesome doesn't it? It smells great and that is why I bought it. However, I should have thought more about what was in the product first. It has sugar beet, which is a good shine activating ingredient, but think about grapefruit for a minute. Grapefruit is acidic and I wouldn't logically believe it would add shine. Well, it didn't. I felt it was not very good and didn't really clean my hair. My hair was not left feeling very soft or shiny. If you are looking for a good shine adding shampoo try Neutrogena's Triple Moisture or the new Pantene line. I personally like the Color Preserve Smooth shampoo and conditioners. I think they make my hair smell great, add shine and preserve my color as advertised.

Lily Boutique - Internet Window Shopping
Okay, I had to save the best for last, Lily Boutique. I will admit, it is nearly impossible for me to just window shop at this store. Everything they carry is just really adorable. The best part is that I just found out about them recently. The gals at Lily found me on twitter and every since, I have been addicted to their shop. There are going to be a couple extra options on this post.
1. Embellished Long Cardi - $31.00
This adorable cardigan is just a great mix of pale grey and gold. The zipper that runs along the buttons and studs add a bit of color and style that will make you swoon. The band at the bottom of the cardigan gives it a very cute and finished look that will definitely make your thighs look smaller. I would wear this with metallic brass leggings, black skinnys or even denim. It is seriously versatile and lovely.
2. Bold Jewel Dress - $29.00
I think what I love most about this dress has to be the generous room in the chest. One thing I know is that finding a dress like this that will fit properly in the chest is very difficult. I don't want to show off a ton of cleavage, but I also don't want to look overly conservative. This dress is just wonderful if you are trying to show a more slim and dressy look. The bold jewels grab in the middle of the waist showing casing your curves while slimming you. I think this dress is definitely a cute addition to any wardrobe.
3. Zip Front 3-D Pocket Dress - $29.00
This is the dress of illusions. It is perfect for a fair amount of body types because of those pockets. If you don't have much in the hip department, this dress will add a little. If you do have hips, this dress can also accentuate what you have while slimming your waste. The details in the pocket are very stylish and the exposed zipper is a look I have seen on a lot of celebrities these days. The picture shows an olive, but they also have it in at least one other color.
4. Striped Dress Top - $24.00
This top just reminds me of the term avant-garde. It pushes the boundaries between what is a dress and a shirt. The bold stripes are fun, yet the color reserves them a bit. It is a class top I would expect to see on one of those old-time hollywoood actresses. I love the defined waist and length. This is definitely a top for many body types and would be an adorable addition to any wardrobe. I would probably wear it with a cute blazer and a pair of black skinny jeans or skinny slacks.
5. Floral Dress - $36.00
This floral dress epitomizes my style. While the true pattern of the fabric only incorporates a peachy pink, green and gray, blue embellishments were added as ribbing, lace and the buttons. I love how that blue makes the gray more approachable and less old fashion. This dress certainly says move over grandma pattern, I am going to show you how to rock this style. This dress would be very cute with a pair of gray heels or even blue for the more daring!
6. Two-In-One - $24.00
I generally avoid two-in-one tops. My feeling is that it usually suggests poor quality or cheapness. However, this top surpasses those boundaries by far. The fabric is really nice and soft looking and the button up tank top look is very cute. The flowy cardigan flaps are also a really fun addition. This is one of those shirts that will you get you compliments because of the way it is made. There just isn't really much else to say about it.
7. Walking In Spiderwebs Sweater - $23.00
This is another shirt of illusions. I also love the name the girls at Lily B gave the dress. While this sweater required an extra glance or two, I was drawn to it for some reason. I will tell you why. I think the best part of this sweater is the way the fabric thickens and darkens at the waist. I like it because looser shirts sometimes widen people. If you have wider shoulders or a chest, this will often turn you to a walking blueberry with toothpick legs and it isn't very attractive. This shirt, on the other hand, has that detail that will slim the look. The girls at Lily B recommend a tank underneath and I agree. The material is soft and comfortable. I would wear this with cute leggins, denim or black pants for a cute biz casual look or night out style.

Moda Xpress - Internet Window Shopping
My second window shopping extravaganza today was at Moda Xpress. I like this store because it gives a more conservative touch to online shopping. If you search the web like I do, you will notice that a lot of these little online retailers have a lot of club wear. This may be the goal for some shoppers; however, I'm no longer the clubbing girl like I used to be. Plus, I think there is a line that can be drawn between dressing sexy and dressing to risque. Moda Xpress provides some nice daytime pieces. My only warning is that they carry fewer cute pieces than they do very strange stuff. Here are a couple of things I picked out.
1. Aztec Tube Top - $16.99
Since this aztec pattern is very "in" for the summer, this tube top provides a nice airy material that supports the trend. It has a cute draw string at the waist and a ruffled top to add a more romantic feel. I like the length as well. It hits this model right at the center of her zipper providing some coverage and can be complimentary on various body types. Also, if you look at this website, I will say that I like this blonde model they chose. She isn't super, super skinny and she looks like most girls you know. I think this is so refreshing compared to some of these other websites that have super skinny girls or girls with really seductive looks on their faces. It sometimes makes the clothing look sleezy.
2. Denim Button Up - $14.99
I think denim tunic is adorable. The little fold at the top gives it a nice detail and the color is really cute. They show the shirt with a pair of lighter jeans complimenting the denim on denim look for the season. However, I think this would also look adorable with cute black jeans or leggings. I like the length because it allows a nice framing of your silhouette and the back is wonderful. The elastic backing allows those girls with a chest to avoid pulling at the buttons in the front.
3. Heathered Beige Tank Cardi - $14.99
This tank is especially cute. I love the rouging in the front with the cute little pockets. The neckline is complimentary and would be perfect with a cute simple necklace. The back; however, is the real showstopper. The crochet pattern gives this rather neutral piece some personality. You can see on the model that it is a very thing and airy fabric, so a tank underneath would be a must. You can wear it with a simple black or white and the pattern will pop no matter what. I generally like to wear very opposite colors under these types of shirts so that it does make sure the crochet shoes well. If the shirt is dark, I wear a white tank under and vice a versa.
4. Black Cap Sleeve, Lace Cardi - $16.99
This cap sleeve open cardigan is probably my favorite of the lot. I love the cap sleeve look and the flowy material of the cardigan. It is certainly a romantic yet casual look. They show the model wearing a thick strapped cardigan, but I might opt for either a simple tube top underneath or a spaghetti strap tank.

Go Jane - Internet Window Shopping
Today I decided to window shop online and see who had cute things for relatively good prices. I will start with Go Jane! Go Jane is an internet store I found a while ago, but I don't usually order anything from them. This is mostly because until recently the materials used for their clothing seemed pretty cheap. However, since cotton shirts are becoming more popular, I don't think it matters as much. I generally avoid their shoes, which is why you will not see any in this post. They have some cute things here and there, don't get me wrong, but I avoid the shoes because they don't seem to have anything Urban Original doesn't already have at a lower mark-up.
1. Tigress Shirt - Buy at GOjane for $17.90.
I love this off-the-shoulder shirt. It is cute and very in style. However, my favorite part is that they have a theme going with this shirt. Pictures on clothing is genreally not my style, but I think what makes this shirt really cute is that it has the slits in the back mimicking what a tiger's claws would do when scratching something. It is a pretty color and would look nice on a casual day out over the weekend.
2. Hippy Smiley Face Shirt - Buy at GOjane for $23.00
What I like most about this shirt is that it isn't just a cheesy smiley face shirt. It actually has some personality. The feather headband around the smiley face makes this less cheese and more care free. I can't believe that rhymed, it was not on purpose. In any case, I think this is another nice weekend shirt when going to the beach, a festival or maybe the park.
3. Casual Taupe Shirt with Cute Embellishments - Buy at GOjane for $26.50
I admit, this shirt is fairly boring in color, but I think it has some nice details to it. The buttons on the sleeves and the pocket give it a little more personality and the uneven bottom puts it in line with current trends. If you pair this shirt with a cute long necklace or summer scarf and maybe a nice vibrant shoe, perhaps red or hot pink, you have a really cute little casual evening outfit for the movies or barbecue.
4 & 5. Cute Jeans - Buy at GOjane from $34.50 - 35.10
I don't usually post pants, let alone jeans. I think jeans are not really an easy thing for someone to recommend. Jeans have been a long time struggle for me because I have hips and thights and a butt, this accompanying my height makes finding that perfect pair of jeans nearly impossible. Honestly, I think with my heigh at 5 feet tall, the capris I am going to show you would be pant length on me and I would have to roll them up again. However, not everyone is built like me, so I wanted to showcase a couple I thought were cute and see to have a bit of stretch. One caviat, if you do look at this jeans and want to buy them, consider your buns hun. If you look at the jeans on the models at their website, particularly the back view, you will notice that the pockets fall below her butt. What does this mean? This means that even her non-existent butt is filling out the pants, which means those of us who have any type of butt are going to have a problem with yanking them up constantly or gappage. However, if you are looking for a pair of jeans that are cute to go with any of those shirt styles above, shorts, skinny jeans or a pair of cute capris like those pictured below would look nice.

Facial Cleansers - My Top 4
As a make-up addict, I know there are a couple steps to my day that are extremely important. Those steps make up my skin cleansing routine. For me it is rather simple, I don't really like to spend a lot of time washing my face, so I generally have two steps.
Step 1. At night I generally wash my make-up off with a mild cleanser or my goddesses in a packet, the cleansing make-up cloths. This little handy things are made by a variety of different companies, such as Garnier, Neutrogena, Ponds, Walgreens, Clean and Clear, Olay. Pretty much everyone makes a version these days. While I am sure all have their benefits, my favorites are the Garnier and Neutrogena cleansing cloths. I tend to avoid Ponds because I feel it is a bit oily and I don't really care for Clean and Clear because I have not had great luck with their other products. This could be because my skin is rather stubborn and I feel clean and clear is a rather gentle line. This is great for those of you with sensitive skin.
Step 2. In the morning I use a mild exfoliator or mild facial cleanser, depending on the state of my skin in the morning. If I wake up with a crazy shine and I just feel oily, I will opt for the exfoliator over the cleanser. It just really depends.
Infrequently - since we all have hormones that render our skin care products useless from time to time, I also have some back-ups. I may use a mask once in a while or a stronger exfoliant. Sometimes I add a little baking soda to one of my mild cleansers to get a stronger exfoliating experience. My honest opinion is that skin is temperamental and it takes the lead from how you are feeling and acting. If you are stressed or dealing with that evil time of the month, you may need to do something more drastic to get your skin in line. The key is to find products you love and work for you. Then, listen to your skin when it comes to determining what to use.
My Top 4 Facial Cleansers
4. L'Oreal Go 360 Clean
I originally found out about this product from Tiffany D. If you are not a subscriber yet, I recommend it. Aside from being a make-up guru, she also likes to share her drugstore purchases and gives some nice reviews. I trust her instincts, so I am generally game when trying what she recommends. I tried this face wash and I really loved it for a while. It is a fairly gentle cleanser that has some exfoliating beads within it. Then, the fun part is that it comes with a little rubber scrubber that you can use to wash your face. I liked this for a while, but ended up ditching the scrubber after a week or so. I found that my fingers were going to do a much better job than the scrubber. However, again, this really depends on your skin type. If you have stubborn oily skin like me, you may want to avoid the scrubber. If your skin is a little more normal, the scrubber should be fine. In any case, I really liked it and I would recommend it.
You can buy it at any drugstore and it will run you approximately $6.99. Right now Walgreens is advertising it for $5.24 on their website.
3. St. Ives Naturally Clear Blemish & Blackhead Control Apricot Scrub
Honestly, I am not even sure where to start with this stuff. I wouldn't recommend using it everyday because it is fairly aggressive for a face cleanser. However, if your skin is dull in the winter or really oily in the summer, this stuff is fantastic. It is an exfoliant, so it is not gentle by any means. However, if you are looking for a soldier, this product is it. It has pretty coarse exfoliation beads and it is made from natural products. The other nice thing about this product is that they sell it in travel sizes at some stores. I think I have seen it at Target and maybe one of the Bed, Bath & Beyond stores that has the make-up section in it.
It sells for approximately $3.99 at most drugstores, but I usually by it at Target or Walgreens.
2. Freeman Superfruits Refining Cleanser
I have known about the brand Freeman for a very long time. I believe it was one of the first brands I ever used for skincare. The skincare line was sold at Walgreens for a really long time, but then I stopped seeing it in my area. I am not sure if it is target audience issue or what. In any case, my sister introduced me to this really interesting find maybe a year ago. One of the Bed, Bath, and Beyond stores near our area has a full beauty section. I had never seen this before, and I have to tell you it is heaven. It is a small area allotted for make-up and then maybe six aisles of beauty products. They have anything from skincare to men's hair care. The other great thing is that they have tons of products you don't see all of the time. Well, while wondering through the store stuffing my basket full of things I wanted to try rather than needed I found the whole entire Freeman skincare line. I was very excited to see this because they make some of the best inexpensive facial masks on the planet! I purchased this refining cleanser and I really like it for everyday use. It seems to balance my skin nicely.
Since I know I haven't seen it at Walgreens or CVS, I will recommend their website for purchasing the product. You can buy it there for $3.99. Also, because I know that I wouldn't bother ordering something for $3.99, try using their store locator link at the bottom of the homepage, or purchase these products as well. I really like their Avocado & Oatmeal Clay Mask and the Cucumber Peel Mask. I can also recommend their foot products also, they are really nice for tired and worn out feet.
1. It Is A Surprise!
Okay, so I felt I needed to set this one up before diving right in. This is a rather unorthodox choice for women's skincare, but I swear by it. I have been using this product for maybe a year now and I have no shame when sharing it with others. It is Every Man Jack facial scrub. It is a rather unknown brand, so I will explain. Every Man Jack is a men's line of skincare products. They first showcased their brand to the masses via Target maybe three years ago or so. My husband was looking for a nice line of skin care products and loved the way their body soap smelled, so he tried the skincare products also. I swear to you that within a day I could already see how nice the product was just by looking and feeling his skin. I was obviously jealous, so I snuck a try here and there and began to love it! The only problem is that when I wanted to go buy it, my Target stopped carrying this particular face scrub. Well, there was Bed,Bath, and Beyond back to save me because I found it there. They do sell it on their website as well.
To give you a good idea of what this product is, it is an exfoliant. It has a bit of a manly scent to it even though they say it is supposed to be a mint scent. It is a cream cleanser with micro-exfoliant beads in it. I think it is a perfect mix of gentle meets assertive. I use it pretty much everyday and it hasn't dried my skin out at all. I swear by it. I also have to say that don't get yourself all crazy about the scent, we are women. If you are going to put on make-up, this means a possible toner, lotion, foundation, and maybe a powder or bronzer. By the time you are done gussying up for where you are going, you will not smell like that facial wash. If you do, who cares, you will smell like you were out with a hot date. In all seriousness, the scent shouldn't last that long.
You can buy Every Man Jack face scrub, signature mint from their website or one of the retailers they list on their website. There is a large selection, but let you be warned, I have a hard time finding it around Chicago, so I am not sure how available it is at each store listed.

Just Try It On - Hair Edition
While we are on the hair theme, I figured lets keep it going. If you are anything like me, you like to change things up. Wait, what's that? It sounds like a theme coming on? Yes, I know, I like to re-invent myself often in the fashion department. What fun is life if you don't try new things. One thing I like to change up aside from make-up, hair color and style, is hair cuts. I have had a pixie, long layers, short punky dos, angled and regular bobs. I just like experimenting with my hair to see what looks nice and what I can avoid the next time. However, one thing I have learned is that if you have any issues with your face, whether it be nose, chin, face shape, you always want a haircut that doesn't accentuate what you hate. This can be somewhat scary since you can't try on a hair cut. But wait, you can now! In one of my many internet exploring days I found these wonderful internet make-overs. If you haven't heard of them, I'll let you in on my secret.
There are at least half a dozen of these websites. Essentially, you upload your picture into a web-based program (no downloading necessary) and then you can try on make-up, hair, glasses, etc. My favorite of the lot is Taaz. It is free and all you have to do is sign up and upload your picture. You will want to choose a good picture head on with good lighting or else your make-up colors will be off. Once you do all of this, the website will guide you through some steps to identify where your eyes are and lips. You go through this series of steps that may take five minutes and then you get to play. I admit the hair doesn't always look real and make-up colors can be off if your lighting is funny, but it is still a really great way to check out styles you have never worn. The site is dominated by celebrity hairstyles, but lets face it...they use the best salons in the world, they are going to have cutting edge style and color. If you want to see a sample, look at the pic below. Those eyes are not my own. I will admit, one of the fun things about these makeovers is you can try color contacts. I have had many different colors, but when I do the makeovers I like to add my green contacts in because my eyes always look brown in these pictures.

Hair Dye - Everybody Does It
Hair Dye, oh where to start. I have had my share of hair dye experiences. Prior to my college years, I was a big fan of dying my hair myself. I have naturally chocolate brown hair, so I generally would turn it variations of brown or red just to spice things up every now and then. When I went to college, I then began getting it done professionally. At that time in the early 2000s, streaks and highlights were in. I would get a nice blondish gold put in. I thought it was cute, but from time to time I would get horrified by the way it seemed that my hair was just turning lighter and lighter as a result of touch ups. I ditched that my senior year for black. I think the black was my favorite because it made my hair so shiny. Now, I am back to dying out of the box. My reasons for seeking out the box versus the salon have many reasons.
For one, dying your hair at home is far more economical than it is to get it done at the salon. Aside from the fear of putting my own highlights in, I went to a salon in college because Central Illinois hair salon prices are far cheaper per foil than they are in Chicago or the Chicago suburbs for that matter. I moved home to the Chicagoland area after college, so I am sure you can see the trend here.
Recently, I got up the nerve to try doing my own highlights at home. I was searching all of the popular hair dye brands (loreal, garnier, John Frieda, etc.) for what colors they have to offer for my boring brown locks. I guess every now and then a change is just a good thing. It can improve your mood, do wonders for your make-up and it is just fun to pamper yourself. Well, I came across a Loreal two-in-one kit. Essentially, you start out by dying your hair one color, and then they give you a bleaching agent to add your own streaks or highlights. I was seriously scared about this decision, so I watched youtube videos, Loreal videos, read the instructions a million and one times and then decided I was brave enough to buy the product and try it out.
The product: L'Oreal Couleur Experte Express Two-In-One Multi-Tonal Color System
Hair Color: French Eclair (Light Ash Brown-Cooler)
My Experience: I have to say as scared as I was, the instructions and videos were accurate. The experience is similar to what they say, the bleach doesn't run. However, I will say two things. First, when you see someone doing their hair, it appears much easier than it is. In the salon you are being worked on by professionals who do highlights constantly. They are fast and obviously have a one-up on you who can't see the back of your head. Secondly, you are limited in time for how long you should keep the bleach on. This means that if you are slow and start at the bottom, the bottom of your hair could reach ten minutes just as you finish the top parts. If your hair is sensitive this could mean you are literally bleach blond underneath and gold or orange-ish up top. They tell you to test your hair after ten minutes by wiping some off, but as I have experienced even with salon professionals, my hair is dark and you can't really see the finished color as well as you can when it is dry. Lastly, it is extremely important you read the instructions, watch the videos and have a mirror and comb available for separating ends. Choosing pieces to dye is not as easy as it would seem. You almost have to practice without the dye before starting, like the night before.
I found that my hair did bleach a bit, but I was scared and washed it off probably a little early. I was worried this meant my hair would be orange, but it actually was more golden. You can't really see it or else I would post a picture. I might try it again to see if I loose my nerve and can be faster at it, but that is just me. I am never happy with my first try.
The Skinny: If you are brave and want to spend $14.99 on highlights compared to salon prices, go for it. However, like I said, watch the video on Youtube, read the instructions, practice the technique and make sure you have a hand mirror and a comb. I was planning on using foils, but like they say and I experienced, the bleach is actually pretty good at keeping place. Oh, and one more note, be careful when you pull pieces, one of the issues I had was that I was ending up with hairs that were coming from other places and I was starting to worry that my pieces were getting to wide. If you are doing this yourself, you really want to ensure you do small, skinny chunks or else your mess up, if one should happen, will be more noticeable.

Poppy's Buttons Update
For those of you who don't know, my sister, mother and I started a little handmade jewelry business. I hate nothing more than shameless self promotions, but we added some things to our official site and I wanted to share because I am excited about it. You can view the new products by clicking on the "shop" button at the top of the screen. For now nothing can be purchased off of the website, so if you do want something let me know and I can sell it to you off of our Etsy. If you do want to look at our Etsy, just follow this link. Our website is poppysbuttons.com
If you have any suggestions, ideas or any other comments about our stuff, let me know. I am really looking for input on things, such as the price. Is it too high? What would you pay for something like that?

The Elephant In The Room
So, lets talk shoes. By now you have determined that if there is one thing I will talk about forever, it is shoes. It is true, I do love them. However, there is an ever-present elephant in the room when it comes to my love for shoes, and that would be the brogue. Personally, I hate them. I think they are cute on men, but for women, yuck. I don't know, I guess I can open my mind to many looks; however, even I have to draw the line somewhere. I guess part of my issue is that I am already not a big fan of flats. Measuring in as short as I am, I certainly don't want to add insult to injury by highlighting my height with a flat shoe. I think what makes brogues worse is that they are so damn masculine and overbearing. I have seen them paired with jeans, skirts, shorts, dresses, and every time I see them I try to convince myself it looks good, but I don't it doesn't work for long. So, what does this really mean?
Well, I say this because I wanted to make a larger point about fashion. Something I see more and more is that everyone jumps on a bandwagon just because it is the new "it" thing. Think about ipods, iphones, skinny jeans, the Atkins diet. All of these things got a lot of attention and people flocked to them before really thinking about the consequences of their action. I am not one of these people generally. I really like to be sensible about my purchases because I want to ensure it is something that fits my personality. I did not have an ipod until maybe two or three years ago. I saw what the capabilities of the ipod were and then I bought a Dell Pocket DJ. Honestly, I loved the Dell version, it worked just as well as an Ipod for much cheaper. The only reason I replaced it with an ipod is because one of my cords broke and I couldn't replace it. I think that type of approach to style is important also. Some looks that will come and go will not fit every body type, image, pocketbook, but that doesn't make you a looser because you have a bit of a tummy and you can't wear a bandeau. It just makes you different and you have the option to avoid certain styles because they do nothing for you. I will never wear brogues, if nothing else because I don't like them, but also because they will make my legs look stumpy and short. Just like a really tall girl should probably avoid really high heals. What is the sense in being taller than everyone else when you are already tall? Perhaps it gives off the vibe that you think you are better than others? I made that up, but you catch my drift.
The fun thing about fashion is that it allows us to be creative. People will always judge and be mean because that is how some people just are. That shouldn't change how you feel about yourself and your choice of how you represent yourself. You don't have to be punk everyday because you listen to punk music, or dress preppy just because your friends do. You can be whoever you wish.
To that end, enjoy life because we only live once...and that was my public service announcement.

Colorful Eyeliner
I know it isn't Cosmetics Tuesday, but I couldn't resist posting this video. I love colorful eyeliner, it is somewhat of a female familial trait. My mother has been wearing turquoise eyeliner for as long as I can remember, my sister (she was a make-up artist for a couple of years) loves it, and I love wearing purple and green. I know that the issue a lot of women have is, they want to wear the colors without looking like a clown. Personally, I think a lot of "how we pull things off" when it comes to fashion has to do with proper fit for clothing, technique for make-up and confidence. There are a lot of styles that I used to wear that a lot of people said I looked good in that they never thought they would. I disagree with those people now and then, it is just a matter of making sure you are comfortable and confident. So, since I know not everyone is so likely to take a risk, I figured I would post this Tiffany D video. She shows you how to apply a liquid color eyeliner and then a special technique that I have actually been doing for a very long time. I tend to do it more with my black eyeliner. I'll explain after the video so you can have a better idea of what I mean.
As you can see in Tiffany's video, she adds the black color under her lash lines. I tend to do the reverse. I really like to have my eyes pop since they are green and that is not common. However, as much as my eyes are green, they do act like hazel eyes when I wear black eyeliner. In other words, they look brownish. So, what I have gotten in the habit of doing is putting my black eyeliner where she puts the pink and then I add a purple or olive green on my water lines (if you do this be careful, it is very easy to hurt yourself if you don't have a steady hand and practice). What this will do is give you the dark eyeliner that makes a nice night look, but you can still have your eyes pop because the color that accentuates it will be closer to your irises.

The Trend: Lookbooks
Lookbooks are not a new thing. For those of you familiar with fashion, a lookbook is something most designers may come out with to showcase how their line fits the new trends for the season. However, it wasn't until more recently that online retailers are showcasing lookbooks to advertise how they too can match their pieces together to create fashion heaven.
I think the lookbook is smart, it gives those confused about what may look good together a chance to plan ahead. If you know that skinny jeans will look excellent with a looser, cropped top, you now know when you go to the store that an outfit can be made relatively easily. Plus, when websites provide this, they generally carry the pieces and you know ahead of time what you will be looking at when buying an outfit.
A couple of stores I know that have lookbooks are Lulu's and ModCloth (it is called the latest trends). Stores like Marshalls and Loehmannsdon't have true lookbooks, but they show you what is trendy. Little guides like these make shopping less stressful and risky. There is nothing worse than going to the store thinking that a shirt you are buying will look good with something you already have, only to find out it doesn't.
So, next time you are trying to figure out what to buy for an upcoming party, start of school, what-have-you, try looking at the lookbooks even if you aren't going to shop at that store. Take note of the cuts and fits making sure that what you try fits the way it does in the lookbook. If you aren't certain, try everything on at home with the tags on comparing it to the pictures to make sure what you bought is what you want. Remember, when it comes to shopping thrifty, it is always better to love your items than be unsure.

Cosmetics Tuesday - Perfecting Eyeshadow Color Choices
One of the things people tell me a lot is that they like the colors of eyeshadow I wear. I love this considering how much I love make-up, but it has taken a while to understand what works best and which colors are just so-so. The first thing I must say is don't get discouraged. With all of the colors available, it is easy to buy blue because you think it will look good only to find it is making your green eyes brownish looking or it washes your skin tone out.
My first tip is to buy a palette. I love palettes because you can play with colors when you are home and determine which colors go well together for smoky eyes or other eyeshadow looks. A couple palettes I love are the Coast Scents pallette and the Manly Make-up Palettes.
Coastal Scents pictured above - $18.95 at Coastal Scent's website.
Manly Make-up pictured above - $27.95 at Manly Make-up's website.
What I like best about these particular palettes is the pigmentation. They are finely pigmented, so the colors roll on just as they look in the palette. The colors are also very rich. Because of this, you only need to use a little bit, which means the colors last a long time. I prefer Manly to Coastal Scents, but both are great and I think it depends on the colors you wish to wear.
The second trick to picking out he right eyeshadow colors is by a simple color wheel reference. To choose the right colors, simply pick your eye color on the wheel and look what is directly across from it. The colors on the other side will be the colors that bring out your eye color. Keep in mind not all color wheels are created equal. I will give you an example. I have green eyes. They are probably an strong candidate for an olive green. If you look at a color wheel, the color directly across is generally purple. Purples do look awesome with green. Another way to bring out your eyes is to wear a variation of the color of eyes you have. Gold, olive green, and forest green also bring out green eyes.
Either method you choose to decide what colors will look best is up to you. However, I personally prefer the palettes. They lead to hours of endless fun choosing color matches. Also, don't be afraid to be adventurous with color, within in reason of course. For the Fourth of July I wore a white shade from my crease to my brow, and then put blue and red on the lid. I used a little bit of tan to blend the red into the crease so that it didn't look totally crazy. It was a really fun look. I also experimented with bright yellow for a short time and got a lot of compliments. I used yellow as the main lid color and added a brown to my crease and a light yellow mixed with an ivory to the brown area. Just remember, bright colors should stay on the lid and more muted colors will be excellent for your crease and up to the brow. Have fun and dare to be different!
Cosmetics Tuesday - Crackle Nail Polish
Sorry for the brief vacation everyone. I was actually training for a consulting position and it got the better of my time. However, I am back in the thick of things.
Today I am going to review A couple of brands making crackle nail polish.
Crackle Nail Polish
For those of you who are unsure, crackle nail polish is a coat of nail polish you put over a first coat of nail polish and it dries looking cracked. Depending on how thick you make the coat of crackle will change how the cracked look comes out. For instance, a thin coat will dry with more skinny cracks probably comparable to lightening. If you put on a thicker coat, you will end up with more of a giraffe print.
Crackle was made popular years ago over a summer or two. Not too many people dove into the style, but I remember my sister and I liked it a bit. I guess it lost its steam quickly and faded into nail polish trend obscurity. However, this past summer Katy Perry brought it back when she was featured with her very own line with OPI. I couldn't believe it when I saw the adds, but I was somewhat unhappy because as much as I love OPI, I didn't want to purchase it for 8 to 10 dollars a bottle. Not a good look!
So, today I am going to review two brands that make crackle and give you the skinny on what I think of them.
Sally Hansen Crackle Nail Polish
You can purchase the Sally Hansen Crackle at Walgreens for $6.99. I first saw it early this summer and was fairly pleased. Knowing that I fell in love with many of their other products (nail stickers, spray on pantyhose, etc.), I thought this crackle would be no different. I purchased the silver and black to start. I liked the look, but wanted something a little more creative. So, I went back and bought the blue and the gold. I found that first, the brush is skinny. This is a problem because the key to crackle is to ensure you get a nice full coat on without overlapping or adding a second coat. If you add a second coat it will not dry properly making the crackle effect obsolete. Not to mention, overlapping shows and looks gloppy and awful. In addition, I didn't love the blue. It was very boring, average blue. The silver and gold were pretty, but it is summer and most of us want a bright color to put on our nails to highlight our tans. Silver and gold tend to have a wash-out effect. Lastly, make sure you double up on the top coat. It chips easily and doesn't just chip a little either. The pieces that crackle come off in full pieces leaving you looking like you didn't put any effort in your nails at all.
The skinny: Don't bother unless you want the silver, gold, white or black. The red, pink and blue are fairly boring and the red almost looks burgundy. At $6.99 a bottle you are better off getting a better quality OPI for an extra dollar or two.
Money Savers Tip - If you do want to save the extra money, use an old clean nail polish brush with a thicker brush or use paint brushes. You can use those options to make sure you get a nice thick coat the first time around.
Pure Ice Crackle
I purchased mine for $3.99 at Walgreens.
I only see Pure Ice every now and then. After purchasing my four Sally Hansen colors, I was at Walgreens checking out new colors of make-up and nail polish and found that Pure Ice also started making a crackle overcoat. It came in late, the Pure Ice M.O., but they have quite the array of colors. There are at least a dozen different colors. They have a lime green, neon yellow, bright pink, neon turquoise. They had a lot of creative and fancy colors. Considering I was already crackled out from Sally Hansen, I will admit, I didn't buy it that day. I kept eying them every time I went to Walgreens, but ignored them until I saw my sister last weekend. She was wearing the neon turquoise and it was gorgeous. When I got home I ran into Walgreens and bought the yellow and the turquoise. I have to say, I am glad I purchased them. They run you four dollars less than the Sally Hansen first off. Secondly, the brush is must nicer allowing a thicker application. The colors are pretty and diverse. My only issue is that as Pure Ice is known for, they are cheap and low quality. Similar to the Sally Hansen crackle, it chips off easily and you can leave the house with it on and loose it before the hour is up if you don't apply a top coat or two.
The Skinny - Buy this product instead. At $3.99, the chipping can be overlooked as long as you add two layers of a top coat over it. They come in a variety of colors with a smoother application.
As you can see in the picture, I layered my turquoise crackle over a white nail polish. The white nail polish was a cheap white color by Sinful Colors I bought a year or so before. It is fairly gloppy and cheap, so I just layered two thick coats before adding my crackle. I let the white coats dry completely, layered the crackle and then added two coats of Revlon Extra Life, No Chip, Top Coat after. I have only had them done for a day, but by now I would have had chipping and so far so good. There is no chipping to speak of!
Enjoy!

Fall 2011 Make-up Must Haves
To accompany a summer make-up video, I thought I would also get your minds geared for Fall. Two must-have make-up looks for this Fall are the following.
1. Dark Brows - that's right ladies, thin is no longer in. To accompany those rich Fall colors, try darkening your brows a bit and adding a strong lip color or number 2 of today's post and your look goes from meek and reserved to severe!
2. Strong Blush - Generally, the articles always say go with glowing or complimentary, muted blush, but this fall it is all about strong make-up looks. Outline your cheek bones with a bit more rouge to get a more dramatic look. You can even go back to the oldie, but goodie method of using one of your favorite lipsticks.
3. Monochromatic - I fear this look a bit because it can easily be messed up. However, monochromatic is in. This means using the same color for your eyes, lips and possibly even blush. You can use versions of each color like a dark lipstick and muted nude lip color or even go a more chocolatey red. It really plays along with the strong blush trend that will allow you to use the same lipstick for your lips and cheeks.

Fall Fashion - What's Hot
I hope everyone is having a pleasant Monday! I know I had a difficult time getting out of bed today, but it was also refreshing to know that I am inside on a day like today. In good ole' Chicago, it is currently 90 degrees, but the humidity and lack of breeze is making it feel like it is 99. For those of you in the south I know it sounds like every summer day, but for us Midwesterners, we were not made to handle this heat.
As a result of this hot day, I thought it might be nice to think about cooler days, like the Fall months! Honestly, I love Autumn. Fall colors have always been my favorite and there is just something so picturesque about the leaves turning colors and that first day you get to wear a cute Fall jacket. In honor of this thought, I figured it best to talk about Fall fashion for 2011. In reviewing my InStyle, it seems we have a lot of interesting things going on. This list will talk about your purchase dos this year!
1. Autumn Tone Jeans
That's right, colorful jeans are in again. This time, rather than the peaches and light blues people are sporting in the summer, the golds, forest green, and burgundy or maroon are in. The styles for these jeans will be slim, boot cut and skinny or cigarette styles. You can pair them with other solids, but be conservative with patterns. While 70s is somewhat in, you don't want to walk around looking like an extra from Dazed and Confused.
2. Cherry Red
I generally don't consider cherry red a fall color, it doesn't have enough black in it. However, from what I read, carrying on the eye popping colors into Fall is where you want to be. The red isn't specific to any one type of clothing, you could purchase a skirt, shirt, dress or coat. You could even devote some of your accessories to this color, but catching the eyes of your adoring fashion fans is just what this year's top Fall color will do!
3. High Waisted Flair Jeans
Personally, I hate this style of pants on myself, it really isn't for the curvy, short girl. If you are particularly thin or thin and tall, this is a better look for you. Although some of these pants do have flattening effects in the tummy area, if you are not comfortable with your mid section and thighs, I would opt for the autumn toned jeans or some of the other options discussed in this list. The look this year is high wasted pants with shorter shirts or jackets to show off that you are wearing this style. Wearing a looser shirt that covers the top of these pants can have a sloppy look and just box off your body.
4. Long, pleated skirts
Taking direction from the 50s, this style is kind of elegant. You can pair a long, pleated skirt with work attire or weekend attire. The length of the skirt is generally just below your knees and the preferred color would be something a bit lighter. Try pale pink, ivory, etc. I don't have pictures just yet because I haven't had luck finding stores rolling out their fall line just yet, but keep an eye out.
5. Denim Shirts
Another look from the milk carton is back. I think denim shirts can be worn in a stylish way, but I caution you to be picky about the shirt and how you wear it. It is very easy to turn this fashion hit for fall into a fashion miss. I have seen some magazines pairing the denim shirts with jeans, but my advice is avoid it if you can. Wear a looser denim shirt with black slim cut jeans or tuck it in to a high wasted, short pleaded skirt. The key is to avoid wearing the shirt like it was once popular in the 80s and bring some fashion allure. One other suggestion is wearing a longer denim shirt almost, short dress-length and pairing it with a pair of cute leggings. You can then belt it off with a cute thick belt or thin belt to accentuate your curves.
6. Patchwork Detail
This one makes me wish I held on to a pair of House of Derion jeans I bought a couple of years ago. It has always been that rebel look to wear jeans with holes or patches. This fall is no different. Whether you buy a pair already constructed or make your own, ensure the patches are not cheesy. A simple pair of jeans with two or three denim patches of a different wash looks great or even patching a cute fabric under a hole in your jeans. Personally, I have a pair or two of jeans that are old and holey, I may buy some lace fabric or a cute thinly striped fabric to stick under to add some flair!
