At this point in my life, I haven't lived with my parents for quite a while. While I love that I have my freedom and well, lets face it, I am married now, I have found that it is kind of difficult to do makeup in some of the apartments I have lived in. I live in what is referred to as Chicago's North Shore. It sounds swanky, but it mostly means frickin' expensive rent for smaller places. I am sure it is nothing compared to L.A. or New York, but it is still pretty sucky. My first apartment out of college was a one-bedroom and all of 715 square feet. It was described as vintage (aka old as crap) with a terrible sink set-up, no cabinet for make-up or even a spot for me to put my plastic drawer bins. So, knowing that I was definitely going to have issues I realized I needed a spot outside of the bathroom to do my make-up.

I started by purchasing a cheap desk from Office Max. This would become my vanity table. I then bought my favorite thing on earth for make-up. It is the Conair Illumina Lighted Make-up Mirror. You can get one at
Ulta for $34.99. This mirror is great because it first simplifies your situation by giving you the mirror and lighting you need. The lighting situation is awesome because you have your choices of setting it for office, night or morning. It also has a magnifying mirror side and two doors that open to give you the option of seeing the sides of your faces or hair when you are getting ready. I had the mirror for maybe four or five years and only parted ways with that mirror because one of the bulbs blew on the side lighting. I don't think you can replace those bulbs, so I ended up getting a new one. I ended up choosing a different one by Jerdon. It is priced at $29.99 at
Ulta. At first I was a little hesitant about his mirror because it wasn't the same as my old one even though it has all of the same features as the old one. However, the selling point was two things. Not only is the Jerdon mirror cheaper, but it also has an outlet built into the mirror. This is so great because if you think about it, most outlets only have two plugs. This is fine if you want to plug in your mirror and your blow dryer, but what happens if you want to heat your straightener or a curling iron at the same time? Well, with this mirror you can plug your straightener right into the mirror and you are all set.

So, if you are moving into your own apartment, college dorm, house, what have you, my set up is extremely functional and was pretty cheap to put together. I highly recommend buying a mirror like this so you can easily do your make-up wherever you want as long as a plug is nearby. Then you can also spread your stuff out on any table top to make sure you have your make-up accessible to you.
